In 2020, when the SWIFT service began the merger with the Prospector service, the State Library identified all of the institutions that were SWIFT members (active or recently active) and made sure that all of these institutions were included in the agreement with the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries and Innovative Interfaces for inclusion in the resulting SWIFT/Prospector service. Through this process, 146 institutions were identified to be included in the merger. The target audience and purpose for this merger was to enable the State’s small public, community college, correctional facilities, and special libraries to loan and have access to books not only from one another but also from the larger public libraries and libraries at Institutes of higher education. This select group of libraries would include all of the small and very small libraries within the state that are not sufficiently resourced to join the Prospector consortium on their own, and provide them with access to the existing Prospector members – who consist of libraries from all of the large academic institutions in the States of Colorado and Wyoming, as well as the large and medium public library systems. Bringing these groups together in one service would be bringing the state the closest to achieving a “statewide” catalog than it has been able to do up until now.

Merging SWIFT into the Prospector ILL platform creates an equitable statewide ILL solution that allows all libraries the opportunity to serve their own communities better, as they will be able to tap into the resources of the academic and special libraries within the state, as well as the largest public library collections. This is a tremendous bonus for library staff and their efforts of meeting the needs of local patrons, researchers, historians, K-12 educators and students, and concurrent enrollment students within their communities, “regardless of place of residence or economic status.”
